(If unknown, a test may done for latex or alkyd - soak a cotton swab with acetone or acetone-based nail polish remover; this chemical will soften and strip latex, while appearing to polish or clean alkyd - the surface must be checked, not the swab, as a residue may collect either way on the applicator.) |

Here is how to calculate the square footage and subtract out windows and doors. Measure the length and height of the wall and multiply. Do this for all walls to be done and add the totals together. The same measuring may be done for all windows and doors, each of which must be subtracted from the wall total. For ceilings, measuring the length and width of the room and multiplying will give the necessary area. The same basic measuring system may be used for most surface area calculations. |
Preparation prior to painting
Surface must be clean - remove contaminants, grease, dirt, mildew, etc. TSP (Trisodium phosphate) may be used as a de-greaser and cleaner but a rinse must be done afterwards. Mildew may be cleaned with a solution made of half water and half household bleach. Rinse also.
Surfaces should be sanded for better adhesion and easier application. Sanding dust may be removed with a tack cloth.
If there are any repairs and filling that need to be done, those areas have to be primed prior to paint application. If caulking is used to fill, make sure it is smoothed out before drying, as caulk is difficult to sand.
